Many dancers strive for uniqueness no matter what your dance style is. Being unique is not just a symbol of character but also of talent and it's an attitude on its own.
Think of the big belly dance names you have heard of, follow and admire. They are usually dancers who have a unique style that makes them who they are. They created signature moves that everyone tries to copy.
Unfortunately too many dancers spend too much time and energy copying other dancers, their moves, their looks and their choreographies. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing with doing this as a beginner dancer. Copying someone's signature moves and choreographies is a great learning tool. But if you would like to make a name for yourself in the world of belly dancing, you have to develop your own style.
The question usually asked is "How do I find my personal style?". The question seems to be harder than it actually is and the answer seems to be simple but not easy. I always tell dancers to simply be themselves and that is how they find their style. It's really not something you will "find" because it's already there. It's something you already have, it is within you and you just need to let it be instead of thinking you have to look and dance like someone else.
Trying to copy other dancers is a waste of the unique dancer within you. You are depriving yourself from the ultimate happiness that we all experience when we dance if you copy someone else and you are depriving the world from seeing the unique style of dance you are born to share with us when you copy others.
This is not a problem many of us deal with in the dance world. Writers struggle with this, designers and artists in general struggle with. The world has been around for awhile now and people have created many things in the creative world, so it seems sometimes as there is not much room for uniqueness and creativity because it has been all done by now. The fact that is absolutely not true. Although some moves are in fact standard and pillars of a specific dance style, the way you execute them and present them will be different simply because it is YOU. Your unique being will always shine if you let it and that is my advise.
Let's chat more about this. Post a comment and let's start a conversation.
How do you show your unique style? Have you found it yet? What is it and how did you find it? I am curious to know ...
