Sword belly dancing is by far one of my favorites that I can't even believe it took this long to do a video series about sword dancing! But again you need to make sure you learn the basis before you experiment with props.
So where does this belly dance style come from? There are as many theories as you can imagine but if we look around the Arab world today and see where we find a similar style of dancing with swords, we find so many tribes that dance balancing all kinds of objects on their head from tea trays to canes and baskets ... etc
We do however see this much more common in North Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia... Swords however are not as common as a dance prop in North Africa as they are in the Golf Arab world, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq ...
I am still trying to learn a bit more about the origins of this art as many of us are and that's the beauty of it. It is as an ancient as we could imagine and we are still enjoying it even though we don't much about it.
So before we start our sword video series, you will of course need a SWORD!
Where do you get one? well, there are many everywhere online and I am going to share few here with you but make sure you actually get a "belly dance sword" and not just any sword. Belly dance swords are balanced swords and that is key to using swords as a prop
The cheaper version of the belly dance swords you see sold a lot online looks like this and this is the kind I advise you NOT to buy! These are not well balanced, very heavy and become more of a pain than a sexy prop. So do yourself a favor, pay just a bit more and get a good sword
