Get a pair and get ready for this fun prop because I will be posting a new series of videos all about FAN VEILS!
Fan veils are a modern prop in the world of belly dance. Inspired by the Chinese fans and combined with veils, they add a fun Asian touch to the old veil prop.
Most students new to this prop often confuse the small fans with the fan veils. Fans veils are much more common than the simple small size fans in belly dancing so make sure to get a fan veil rather than just a fan
When purchasing a fan veil, there are few things to keep in mind:
- Length: this must be not too long yet not too short. One of the rules I have about how to decide the length is this: put the fan on your head flat and the veil part should touch the floor. That means it's not too short and maybe just a bit longer than it should be but that's better than a short fan
- Width: this is not a big factor but makes a difference for the overall look of the fan on stage. Stay away from narrow fan veils. These are usually made cheap to save the fabric but you can't control them well and are a big waste of money
- Color: make sure the fan veil color matches your costumes completely or just slightly. At least one of your costume colors should be the fan color. Maybe a shade of the same color ... but the resemblance should be there
- Material: like veils, it is not necessary to spend a lot buying a silk fan veil although they are beautiful and weightless which means they are perfect if you have a shoulder injury that makes it hard for you to move a heavy fabric
