It seems always that the biggest struggle of all new belly dance students and some advanced students is IMPROVISATION! How to improvise? Can you improvise? .... so many questions about improvisation
So can you?
Well YES! I guess that's the good answer first. As you improve, you can improvise! Music and dance are made up for basic beats that make up the basic combos and the combos make up the sections and the sections make up the dance. It's really that simple.
Can everyone improvise? NOOOOOOO.....
Those who can't improvise usually struggle with the music more than the dance. You must have a very good ear for the beat as we say. Some people can just hear the beginning of the beat or the melody and they know how it will end. Some don't ... those are the "dancers" who can't improvise.
But is this something you can actually learn?
YES! There are 2 ways to accomplish this
1- get used to the music. Whatever music you are dancing to, listen to it even more until your ear is simply trainer to recognize the complete beat and melody from the beginning. This will help you finish the moves you are using in the beginning of the dance and be creative on the spot!
2- learn the melodies and the beats. Every type of music has its common rhythms. You can dissect them and learn how they start and finish. Then, learn some combo ideas that go with each rhythm and this will help give you some ideas as to what moves you can use when you hear the specific rhythm. And hopefully that will help you eventually create your own moves and combos
