I previously asked the question on Facebook: why do you belly dance? I find it important when we do anything in life to stop once in awhile and ask ourselves why we do what we do. So why do we belly dance?
I gave few options:
- For fun
- For fitness
- To make friends
- To build self confidence
Here are the results in order of popularity:
1- For fun
2- For fitness
3- To build self confidence
4- To make friends
Someone suggested, and others agreed, on another option "it's cheaper than a therapist"
It's interesting to read the results especially with all we hear. We all hear that many women belly dance because it helps with their self esteem. I found it interesting in my experience that many women who belly dance have plenty of self esteem! So I suggested this as an option to see what the response is and obviously it's not the reason most of us belly dance.
It's seems that most of us do it for fun and fitness! Although in the process of doing so, we do make friends but it's not the main reason to start belly dancing. We also build more self confidence as we belly dance even though it's not the reason we belly dance.
But how about "it's cheaper than a therapist" option suggested? I sure hope does not mean that some of us belly dancers distract ourselves from the real problems in life with the dance! I am not a big fan of this way of handling problems but would love to hear what you think!
